The former Wolves and Exeter City frontman was on trial with Chesterfield and appeared in a number of pre-season friendlies.

Having attended the squad’s 24-hour getaway to Martin Allen’s house, McAlinden seemed set to become a permanent fixture.

But speaking after last night’s 1-1 draw with Wigan Athletic, Allen revealed the 24-year-old had left the Sprieites pre-season camp.

“McAlinden has left yesterday afternoon,” said Allen.

“He’s gone to a League club I think, from what I’ve been told.

“It looks like we’ve lost him.”

Allen also confirmed that Chesterfield’s recruitment plans remain ‘on hold.’

With a potential buyer for the club waiting in the wings, the manager is unable to bring in any new players or ship out any of the current crop.
