Spireites looking at forward in training as competition emerges for Chester frontman
Chesterfield are taking a look at a striker in training this week according to manager Martin Allen.
On Monday the Derbyshire Times revealed Town were targetting Jordan Archer, but with a club at a higher level expressing interest, the Chester frontman now appears likely to go elsewhere.
The Spireites have come close to a number of forwards this summer before missing out.
But Allen insists he is ‘sitting comfortably’ over the hunt for a goalscorer to partner Gozie Ugwu and the club still have options.
“We’ve got a lad coming in training with us today for the week,” he said.
“We’re looking round with contacts at all of the clubs within an hour from here, that might help us.
“Managers are now trying to shift out players who they feel could play at this level.
“We’ve got three or four options out there.
“We’ll now see how that unfolds this week.”
After 15 years in management, the situation won’t be unfamiliar to Allen and while he says he’s not overly vexed by it, he’s not ignoring the fact that Town are light in the attacking department.
“At the minute I’m sitting comfortably.
“Zavon (Hines) played very well with Gozie (Ugwu) up front on Saturday.
“But it’s fair to say we need at least one centre forward, we obviously need to have one on the bench as well.”

Allen says there are a number of stumbling blocks that can get in the way of a potential signing and the Spireites have been hampered by a few of them.
The remedy is to simply keep working on recruitment.
“This is the way it is.
“If you target good players then other people want them too.
“If you target good players, clubs are loathed to let them go on free transfers.
“Sometimes players don’t want to come to this league, sometimes players from lower leagues want to come to Chesterfield but the fees clubs want are far too high.
“There are lots of ifs and buts.
“Sometimes families don’t want to move up.
“We’ve been caught out on a few of those recently.
“Carl Muggleton is working double over time to pull it all together.
“We have to keep working, it’s just par for the course.”
