SPIREITES: Chesterfield FC closing in on new signing

The Spireites sold captain Sam Morsy to League One rivals Wigan Athletic late Thursday evening but have continued their search for new players.

Danny Wilson’s Chesterfield have a rare blank weekend prior to Monday’s deadline due to Colchester United’s continue involvement in the FA Cup.

“We’ve been discussing a deal with a player for the last 24 hours,” Turner, Spireites’ chief executive, told the club’s official site on Friday.

“Hopefully in the next 24 hours we’ll get the green light. We are recruiting and are always looking to bring players to the club.”

On Morsy’s exit, Turner said: “Sam wanted to leave and has wanted to leave for over 12 months. Paul Cook, Dean Saunders and myself as well have sat down on more than half a dozen occasions - and with his agent on two occasions - to try and sort out a longer term deal for Samy, but there wasn’t any interest from him to sign.

“We’ve known that and in the two windows since then the valuation of the player has been decreasing with his contract coming to an end.

“We don’t want to sell any of our players but the unfortunate thing is that once a player knows what contract he’s going to receive and which club it’s coming from they want to go.”

And added: “If we had players at this club who were average then we wouldn’t be selling any players. The recruitment at this club is second-to-none and the players we have brought in during the last two and half years, including some who are here now, are proving to be value for money, they’ve developed well and then other teams come and look at them, like them and want to take them.”
