SPIREITES: Chesterfield boss Danny Wilson offers advice to Sam Morsy

Danny Wilson believes Sam Morsy would have plenty of options in the summer if he were to remain at Chesterfield this January transfer window.

Morsy’s contract at the Proact Stadium is due to expire at the end of the current campaign and the midfielder has been the subject of intense speculation with several reported suitors from Championship and League One.

But there have been no offers for the Spireites captain so far this year and Wilson is keen to keep him at the club beyond this month, while expressing his frustration towards the workings of the window.

He said: “He’ll have loads of options in the summer. He’ll be a free agent. If another club comes in and he fancies it, that club might not be there again in the summer. They might go to their second target. It’s a gamble.”

Wilson praised Morsy’s professionalism and said the player would be difficult to replace if he were to leave.

“If Sam Morsy were to go, we’re going to need a big replacement,” said Wilson, who has been monitoring different players’ availability on a daily basis.

“We don’t like this window. I think every manager in the country would say they don’t like it. They’d prefer it not to happen because you just can’t react at times.

“At least we can go into the emergency loans a week after the window closes so we’re not out on a limb but at the same time you have your targets and you don’t know if you can get them.

“There will be players out there, there will be replacements, but will they be the players we want? Possibly not at times. Your first choice may have gone, he maybe second, third or fourth choice.”

Meanwhile Armand Gnanduillet’s move to Leyton Orient has almost been completed.

Wilson added: “There are other areas of the squad that need strengthening. We’re second part of the season and it’s the most telling part. We want to go in with a squad that’s prepared and every position covered.”
