Spireites boss Wilson frustrated by '˜nervous' point

Danny Wilson said today's game at the Proact bore the hallmarks of a nervous relegation scrap.

The Chesterfield boss, who felt his side should have had a ‘stonewall’ penalty in the first half, was disappointed not to have made Fleetwood keeper Chris Maxwell work harder.

Speaking after the 0-0 draw, he said: “It was a little bit anxious and tentative at times, something you’d expect for two teams who knew the value of three points today.

“We both wanted to get them but both wanted to make sure we didn’t lose them either. It was nip and tuck on both sides.

“To come away with a point, it doesn’t really get us away from anywhere, but doesn’t get us any closer. We’ve got to maintain a positive approach from it.

“The disappointing thing is that we didn’t make the goalkeeper work anywhere near enough from the chances we created.”

Wilson is still backing his attacking players however, despite the Spireites’ return of four goals from their last five games.

They were unfortunate not to break the deadlock today, he said.

“Any other given day I’d have put my hat on the lads who had the chances to stick it in the back of the net.

“Maybe a little bit of tension or anxiety had crept into the play, which is to be expected sometimes. You have to say unlucky really.”

Things could have been different had referee Nigel Miller seen a foul, and not a dive, when Lee Novak went down in the box in the first half.

Wilson called it a stonewall penalty and spoke to the referee about the decision.

But he was pleased with what he saw at the other end of the pitch.

“That’s the first (cleansheet) for a while, we’ve not had too many, not enough,” he said.

“Although we couldn’t score we stuck in there.

“They’ve got some good players Fleetwood, they’re not the worst team in the league by any stretch of the imagination.

“The cleansheet pleased me more than anything else.”
