A sophisticated ‘supercomputer’ has had its say on where Sheffield United are likely to finish in the Premier League.

The Blades are pulling up trees so far this season and are sitting comfortably in 5th position as things stand, ahead of big names like Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

FiveThirtyEight’s soccer power index ratings (SPI) are used to forecast a number of leagues around the world.

Their predictions suggest that Sheffield United have a 3% chance of retaining their 5th placed position until the end of the season, and offer the Blades just a 1% chance of finishing in the top four.

As things stand the model thinks it is most likely that United will finish in 11th place, with the model offering a 26% chance that the Blades will finish between 11th and 13th.

The model has predicted that Sheffield United will finish on 46 points, which would give Chris Wilder’s men enough breathing room to avoid the relegation battle.

Sheffield United are given just a 9% chance of the drop, and are faring much better than their automatic promotion rivals from last season, with Norwich City given a whopping 74% chance of being relegated after their slow start.

Play-off winners Aston Villa are also considered in more trouble than the Blades and have been slapped with a 30% chance of relegation.
