Managerless Sheffield FC pulled off a 2-0 win at Romulus in the Evo-Stik Division One South last night despite being without the injured Darryl Winter, Ben Starosta and Ryan Davis, while leading scorer Brian Cusworth was suspended.
Steve Woolley fired Sheffield into a seventh minute lead and the hosts were reduced to ten-men just before the break. Sheffield made the most of their advantage, Andy Gascoigne grabbing the second on 73 minutes.
Stocksbridge Park Steels saw their Premier Division survival hopes knocked with a 4-2 defeat against Burscough at Bracken Moor. Steels’ Mark Ward headed home to give Gary Marrow’s side a second minute lead. But Darren Brookfield fired Burscough back on level terms, with Kevin Leadbetter nudging the visitors in front on 36 minutes.
A misunderstanding saw Bret Lovell then goalkeeper David Ratcliffe both miss the ball, allowing Leadbetter to tap home from 20 yards.
Steels pulled a goal back when Andy Ring converted from close range. Jack Muldoon then hit the post, while Steels twice saw efforts cleared off the line. However, Burscough sealed the points in injury time with Brookfield rounding Ratcliffe.
Frickley Athletic slipped deeper into relegation trouble, losing 2-1 at home against Retford United. The Blues led through an Ashley Burbeary penalty, but the Badgers levelled through Michael Blythen, with Niall O‘Brien grabbing the winner in time added on.
Worksop Town came away from leaders FC Halifax Town with a creditable 0-0 draw. Rossington Main are in the semi-finals of the Wilkinson Sword Trophy after a Nathan Fraser strike gave them a 1-0 win over Barton Town.
