The Star reported yesterday that subject to registration, former Everton forward Korede Adedoyin would join up with the first team squad for their trip to Fulham on Wednesday evening.

Adedoyin was not included in the under-23 side that lost out to Barnsley this afternoon and pictures of him training with the first team appear to have confirmed that he is well and truly in Monk’s thinking ahead of the trip to London.

Among the other Owls youngsters present were Alex Hunt, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Liam Shaw and Ciaran Brennan who all started in the 2-0 win at Rochdale in the last round. Conor Grant may well miss out having picked up an injury in the under-23s’ 3-2 defeat to Wigan last week.

Also pictured were midfield man Liam Waldock and forward Charles Hagan, both on the bench at Spotland but who may also be in line to make their first team debuts.

What Monk won’t do is throw these players into an environment they are not ready for.

Speaking on the debuts of Brennan and Grant last week, Monk said: “I’ve seen it before where people put a young player on the pitch just because it sounds good and it looks good for the club, and I’ve seen players who haven’t been able to handle that and then you don’t see them again.

“My job is to protect, and to make sure when they do go on the pitch, they’ve earned it and I feel it’s the right time.”
