Iorfa was a standout performer for Wednesday last time out, and was rewarded for his efforts as fans voted for him as their best player over the course of the campaign.

Having recently turned 25, the centre back still has his best years ahead of him, but has now found himself as one of the most experienced Championship players at the club going into the 2020/21 campaign, and with that comes a host of new responsibilities.

Speaking to The Star about stepping up, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers man said, “It’s crazy… Just last season I was probably one of the youngest ones in the first team, and now my role has completely changed.

“I feel like I’ve got a lot of experience though, and with a lot of young players coming through, I feel like I’ve got to step up now and be a leader in the dressing room and be more vocal as well.

So will that help him find a new gear at Hillsborough?

“Yeah, definitely,” he explained. “It gives me more responsibility. As a young player coming through, you lean into the seniors to help you, give you advice and guide you through. Now I have to set standards for myself and make sure I perform to a high level. If I’m going to help these young players then I’ve got to lead, if I’m not performing well then it won’t have the same effect.

“I’ve got to be an example… I’m enjoying the role, and I think it helps bring you out of your shell as well.”

Iorfa is expected to start for the Owls as competitive action returns for Garry Monk and his team against Walsall in the Carabao Cup this Saturday, and he’ll be hoping that he can show fans once again what he’s capable in what could be a pivotal season for both him and Sheffield Wednesday as a football club.
