Following a dreadful run of form, both in terms of results and performances, Wednesday arrested the slide last week with a 3-3 draw at Birmingham – a match they were unfortunate not to have won.

And then a dramatic finale against Charlton on Wednesday night saw the Owls pick up their first win at Hillsborough since December, thanks to Steven Fletcher’s injury time winner.

Those two displays have reignited belief in the camp and manager Garry Monk has taken a ‘let’s see what happens’ attitude.

However, with the spectre of a points deduction hanging over them as the EFL conduct an investigation into the sale of Hillsborough, Monk is well aware that a consistent run of positive results could end up helping them stay clear at the bottom end.

Speaking ahead of today’s visit of Derby County, Monk said: “I want to try and get as many points as possible, you never know what can happen.

“Never give up, that's the mentality we must have. We have made things a little more difficult for ourselves. We have games and points up for grabs and we have to be as determined as we have been in the past two games to build something, build momentum and get as many points as possible and then we'll see what happens, at both ends.

“That might be to get back up where we were or help us with, if anything (comes from) the EFL situation – we have to protect ourselves both ways.

“Our main aim is to look ahead of us and if we can push up that table and get some wins and points on the table you never know what can happen. That's our number one objective.”
