The bookies currently make former Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion and Middlesbrough boss Tony Pulis as favourite to replace Garry Monk at Hillsborough, with ex-Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner and Paul Cook, who lists Chesterfield, Portsmouth and Wigan Athletic as clubs he’s managed, among the front-runners.

But what about the fans?

As The Star reportedly earlier today, many Wednesdayites would love to see club legend Nigel Pearson make an emotional return to S6 – with 45 per cent of supporters who took part in our poll last night wanting him to succeed Monk.

Pearson, who lives in Sheffield, skippered the Owls side which famously overcame the odds to defeat Manchester United in the 1991 Rumbelows Cup final and would be a popular choice on the terraces.

Other names banded about by the Wednesday faithful include Cook, former Owls striker Ryan Lowe – now manager of Plymouth Argyle – and ex-AFC Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe.

So let’s take a look at what Wednesdayites on Twitter are saying about those linked with replacing the departed Monk.

@LifeIsPeachy82 Be a brilliant appointment. Just the type of manager the fans and players need. Have a horrible feeling it will be Pulis though.

@DirtyLyle Would love Pearson. Won’t happen though.

@MarkJudge01 Hope to God we don’t appoint him, let him stay a legend. Let’s face it the manager was the problem, then it was the players, then it was the manager again. It’s an endless merry-go-round. Until DC lays down a proper long-term strategy and sticks with manager it’s going to be the same.

@chris_shelley I’m normally against former players returning as managers, especially ones we hold in high regard, but Pearson is what we need right now regardless of that. Seems unlikely though.

Lee Johnson

@toonowl67 Why not? I think Bristol City did well for a few years and played some attractive football - he was of course at Barnsley so knows the area too.

@DavidRiggett Rather have Boris

David Wagner

@iancrooks546 Wagner, not for me. We want a manager to take us to the promise land and keep us there. He’s not the one.

@samboo20 Get him in. Think Wagner would do a good job

@marble23_ Dream come true if a guy with a Championship promotion on his CV took us on. Would be a resounding yes from me.

@Mainsey93 Gets worse!! Pulis, Neville and now this guy. Christ.

Phil Neville

@MLoon42 This screams "scraping the barrel" for me I am afraid! Is this really the best we can do??

@ayoungdesigner Ha! ...wait what?!

Paul Cook

@uptheowls76 All the people saying no make me laugh, maybe we should go for Poch . Cook is exactly what we need, worked wonders at Wigan under serious constraints

@YanSJ Hell no

Tony Pulis

@lewsouthy Don't want Tony Pulis by any stretch of the imagination, but don't get the overreaction. Plays rubbish football yes, but effective rubbish that gets wins. Give me that over some "promising young manager" with a golf jumper who plays tippy-tapping out from the back nonsense.

Eddie Howe

@aussieowl Can't see Eddie Howe coming to S6. Surely he would be looking for Premier League gig. WBA could soon be looking for new manager.

Ryan Lowe

@yead0n Ryan Lowe, obsessed with making his home grounds a fortress, exactly what we need.
