Will Grainger receives another boost ahead of Sheffield Wednesday contract acceleration
Will Grainger burst onto the scene at Sheffield Wednesday last season.
Sheffield Wednesday starlet Will Grainger has received his latest international call-up alongside goalkeeper clubmate Logan Stretch, with both having set of for under-19s duty with Wales, where they’ll play a part in two friendlies in Spain ahead of this summer’s European Championships. The Owls duo will travel to Valencia for run-outs against Qatar on Friday and then Sweden next Monday. Both are expected to make the Euros squad, where Wales will act as hosts.
Grainger is one of a number of Wednesday players at the heart of contract discussions, which are expected to accelerate in the next week or two as the club’s circumstances become clearer. As previously reported by The Star, the club have undertaken financial forecasts to better ascertain their budgetary landscape. Incoming sporting director Simon Wilson remains under contract with Stockport County and may have to work a short notice period, though it is hoped his influence will be felt in the coming days and weeks with much to put together ahead of the new season.
Some discussions have taken place between Wednesday and a number of players including senior men Svante Ingelsson and Max Lowe, with Grainger also a priority given the potential he showed in the latter stages of his maiden voyage of first team involvement. The 17-year-old made seven appearances last season but was more prominent in the last three matches of a difficult campaign, scoring from the bench at Oxford United in eye-catching fashion before making his full Championship debut in the last day win over West Bromwich Albion.
Wilson’s arrival is also expected to kick-on Wednesday’s transfer activity, though the window doesn’t open until June 15. A near ground-up squad rebuild is required and preliminary work has been undertaken with a number of potential targets.
