It’s fair to say that Wigan supporters made their feelings known on Paul Cook’s substitution of teenage debutant Joe Geldhardt last night.

The 17-year-old England youth starlet was a bright spark in the first hour of proceedings – with the score locked at 1-1 – before he was substituted for Michael Jacobs.

The change sparked loud booing from all four corners of the DW Stadium, with one irate supporter standing towards the press box to demand more scrutiny is placed on Cook.

Wigan charged back to win 2-1 with a Jamal Lowe injury-time winner, with Jacobs a handful.

And asked about his reaction to the crowd’s response to his change, Cook said: “I’m not going to start discussing the crowd’s reaction and stuff like that, that’s just how it is if you know what I mean.

“That’s football today, isn’t it? If people think that’s supporting your team, I’d be a million miles from that.

“It was quite loud booing. It doesn’t bother me, we’ve just won 2-1 and I make decision because I think they’re right.

“A 17-year-old lad like that, going into his debut, you’re bringing on Michael Jacobs and Joe Williams, you’ve got to make those decisions, that’s part and parcel of the game.

"I think people should always respect people that are coming on and not off because it’s a team game and you’ll never win anything with individual players.

“I’m delighted for everyone especially Joe who had an excellent debut.”

The win was Wigan’s first in 17 matches. They remain in the Championship relegation zone.
