Why striker was 'relieved' to score first Sheffield Wednesday goals but gutted at missing out on hat-trick

‘DKD’ is enjoying life at Sheffield Wednesday so far and is pleased to be back playing regularly

Davis Keillor-Dunn said he was relieved to score his first league goals for Sheffield Wednesday but was gutted not to net a hat-trick.

The 28-year-old, who is on loan from Wrexham until January, had only bagged in the EFL Trophy before his brace in the 5-0 demolition of AFC Wimbledon on Saturday. The Sunderland-born forward, who has struggled to get first-team football at his parent club since moving from Barnsley, felt a mix of emotions at full-time.

He told The Star: “I am buzzing to get off the mark in the league. I got one in the Jersey Mike's Trophy, but it was great to get a couple in front of the Hillsborough faithful. It is just fantastic playing your football in front of these fans. I was really desperate to score. I normally wouldn't really do a knee slide! I think it was just a bit of the past few months. I've not really played regular football as much as I wanted to, so it was a little bit of relief in there, just to get that first one.”

Keillor-Dunn, who feels he has his match sharpness now, received praise from manager Henrik Pedersen for his defensive work and the former Mansfield Town man said getting a clean sheet was emphasised hugely in the changing room. Down the other end of the pitch, ‘DKD’ scored Wednesday’s second goal when he ran through from the halfway line before grabbing the fifth when he curled home from inside the box.

“I always think the ones that you have more time with, you start overthinking things,” he said of his first goal. “I saw Harry Gray to the left of me, and I was like, do I square it? And I was just like, no, just do what you do, do what you've done over the years, and just keep your cool, keep your composure, and put it in. And then the one through the legs, I've done that quite a lot, it just felt natural.” On missing a late chance that would have completed his hat-trick, he added: “I think was a bit of a sitter to be honest. The header, I have just got to keep it down. I think if I head it back the same way as it came from it probably it goes in, but the three points is the main thing. The individual stuff is nice, but the three points is most important.”

Keillor-Dunn, who says he is most comfortable in a central attacking position, has been impressed with Pedersen’s attention to detail and expects talks about possibly extending his loan to take place nearer the time.

“We have got a great changing room,” he said. “It's just been so easy, integrating with the team. There are some great experienced lads, some really good young lads. I think we have got a perfect mix. It's just more natural to me being in the middle of the pitch and landing on things and driving with the ball, scoring and creating. It's just more natural to me. But we're always having conversations between me and gaffer and stuff like that. He's very understanding, which is which is really pleasing.”
