Why Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Sam Hutchinson is on the brink of a second ban this season

The Sheffield Wednesday player collected his ninth booking of the season in Saturday's 3-1 triumph at Charlton Athletic.

Hutchinson, who has featured 16 times this term, was penalised for a first half foul on Addicks star Erhun Oztumer.

Some observers felt Hutchinson was lucky to avoid picking up a second caution when he upended the attacking midfielder again in the final quarter of the televised contest.

But Owls boss Garry Monk argued referee TIm Robinson made the right decision not to punish Hutchinson, saying: "It wasn't worthy of a second yellow card."

The cut-off point for players picking up 10 bookings falls after 37 matches in the English Football League.

Hutchinson has already sat-out one fixture this season due to suspension.

He missed the home victory over WIgan Athletic in October, having accumulated five yellow cards.

Monk described Hutchinson's performance at The Valley as "fantastic" but admitted he has accrued "some silly yellow cards".

Speaking at the end of September, Monk said he was not worried about the amount of bookings Hutchinson or defender Julian Borner had collected.

He said: "I will never take away that commitment side to players if it is challenges or trying to be on the front foot but, of course, if that becomes too much for one player or they were committing it too much then you need to have a word.

"As long as it is not for stupid or needless yellow cards, we will deal with it as we go along."
