The on-loan Wigan midfielder reported a positive atmosphere in the camp throughout the extended training period that ended late last week.

Wednesday trained on longer than a number of rival clubs across the Championship before concerns over the ongoing coronavirus crisis grew and the players were sent home with bespoke training regimes designed by the club’s sports science team.

Having entered the break off the back of a humiliating 5-0 defeat at Brentford and one league win in 10, Windass believes the break will have done Wednesday good.

“You can only look at it in a good light,” he said. “If you look at it as a negative you’re only going to suffer.

“We’ve used it to learn a bit more from Garry and each other and that can only benefit us, that’s the mindset we’ve had. You can’t look at it as just hanging around doing nothing waiting for football to start up again.

“We’ve been learning about formations and roles, we’ve been keeping fit. I think we’ll come back much improved.”

Football is currently set to resume from April 30, but with experts suggesting any resumption is likely to be some weeks later than that.

And Windass suggested that if they are to show the same work ethic as they did leading into the break, doubled with the returns of Massimo Luongo and Adam Reach, the return of football will see Wednesday in a better place.

The 26-year-old said: “I haven’t played with those players but having played against them many times, they’re big players. I’m looking forward to having them back. It’ll be a boost for the whole team.

“Knowing the manager and seeing how diligent and hard-working he is, that attention to detail, he’ll be there now looking over stuff, stuff we’ve done right, stuff we’ve done wrong and we’ll hit the ground running.

“We were training every day up until the authorities suggested we weren’t able to. It’ll be exactly the same when we get back.”
