Why a Jack Marriott recall is probably likely for Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday

Marriott came in as an exciting loan signing on the deadline day of the last transfer window, and Garry Monk quickly brought him into the side for his debut in the 1-0 win against Birmingham City.

But the 26-year-old went on to make just seven appearances for the Owls – including four starts – before Monk was fired, and it was revealed shortly afterwards by Tony Pulis that the forward had picked up a serious injury and returned to his parent club, Derby County.

It is known that Derby have a recall clause in the forward’s loan deal that would allow them to cut short his spell at Hillsborough this month, and given the relegation scrap that the Rams and the Owls find themselves in, it would be no surprise to see it exercised.

Wednesday’s loan of Aden Flint, another deadline day signing, was terminated earlier this week, and a similar decision may be taken on Marriott this month as Dejphon Chansiri looks at where the squad is at.

From an SWFC perspective, Marriott hardly set the world alight in his handful of appearances before picking up an injury, and for Wayne Rooney’s side, they’ll certainly be wary of taking the risk that one of their players could find some form and help a Championship relegation rival.

Like the Owls, Derby are also struggling for goals this season (they’re the lowest scorers in the league with 14 to date), and Rooney’s comments previously have suggested that they’re considering bringing him back to Pride Park.

He said last month, “I will have to speak to the doctor and to Jack in terms of how we move forward in January, whether he is moving forward with us or with Sheffield Wednesday.

"That is something we will have to sort out in the next couple of weeks."

Now almost fit, presumably, the time has come to make a decision, and freeing up another place in the squad, as well as some wages may suit both parties as Marriott waits to find out what happens next.
