Why Charlton Athletic boss Lee Bowyer was left "angry" by Steven Fletcher's late winner for Sheffield Wednesday

Substitute Fletcher scored a dramatic winner from close range to give the Owls their first win in eight Championship games.

The goal sparked wild scenes among the Wednesday players and staff on the touchline.

The win lifts Garry Monk’s side back into 12th in the Championship and eight points off the play-offs.

But Addicks boss Bowyer said Fletcher’s 13th goal of the season should not have stood, claiming Wednesday should not have been awarded a free-kick for a foul on Atdhe Nuhiu which led to the goal.

“Disappointed, frustrated, angry, because my players gave absolutely everything and they did not deserve not to come away with anything tonight,” Bowyer said.

“It was not a foul for their goal. One hundred per cent it was not a foul.

“I spoke to the ref afterwards and he said ‘because your players sandwiched him’. A 6ft 7in striker. He got sandwiched. I am sure it is still a contact sport. There was minimal contact and he gave a foul. It was a metre in front of me. It was never a foul.

“It is becoming a non-contact sport now, that is the way it is going.

“Ten seconds to go and he gives something like that and it is nothing. It is wrong.

“We deserved to come away with a point and we leave with nothing over a decision.”
