And as a result, boss Garry Monk has admitted he would have had to make a big call on who should start in goal when the Owls take on Birmingham City on Wednesday night.

Cameron Dawson will indeed start in goal for the match at Hillsborough, though Monk’s decision to recall the 24-year-old was made a little bit easier by Westwood struggling with what the manager said was a shoulder injury.

Westwood gave away a penalty against West Brom on Saturday when he collided with Baggies playmaker Matheus Pereira in the 88th minute.

This came after a questionable display against Swansea just before the international break in which the Republic of Ireland international was also criticised.

“I think for goalkeepers it's very difficult,” said Monk. “There's always going to be mistakes in the season - nine times our of 10 those mistakes lead to goals for goalkeepers.

Keiren knows as well as me that when you are in these positions you can’t afford to make a number of mistakes over a short period of time. You might get five or six a season, throughout the season but when you make so many in a short period of time it's always going to be difficult.

“Cameron is going to be playing - Keiren has got a bit of an injury as well but it would have been a decision i would have to make anyway but Cameron will be playing on Wednesday.”
