New recruit Gary Hooper says that Sheffield Wednesday chief Carlos Carvalhal played an influential role in his decision to join the Championship club on loan.

The 27-year-old has been on the Owls’ radar for several months and finally moved to Hillsborough on Tuesday prior to their superb Capital One Cup victory over Arsenal.

Carvalhal said Hooper, brought in from Premier League strugglers Norwich City, was his number one striking option. Now the former Celtic player, who is in line to make his Wednesday debut against Nottingham Forest tomorrow, is keen to repay Carvalhal’s faith in him.

“Carlos [Carvalhal] told me he has been after me since day one and wants to play a high pressing game,” Hooper told The Star. “The team have been playing well in the last couple of games. It is very good to hear the gaffer wanted me and I am excited about the next few months.”

Hooper blames Norwich for the deal being delayed, saying: “I was suppose to sign on the same day as Michael Turner (in August) but my deal fell through. I had medical and it just didn’t happen.

“It didn’t happen because of Norwich. They said they needed me.”

Hooper is staying tight-lipped regarding his long-term future.

He said: “If I’m not in Norwich’s plans at that time then we’ll talk about it – but at the moment I’m here until January 17 so we’ll go from now until then.”

Owls will travel to Stoke City on Tuesday, December 1, for their Capital One Cup quarter-final clash.
