Former Owls striker Steven Fletcher’s second half goal was enough to secure all three points for the home side as they won their first league game in 10 matches against a Wednesday side which failed to fashion any chances of note at the Bet365 Stadium.

The defeat leaves Neil Thompson’s men still in 22nd place as the battle to beat the drop hots up at the bottom of the second tier.

Writing on Twitter, our Wednesday correspondent Joe Crann posted: “They deserved it from that second half, #SWFC weren’t really at the races.”

But did Wednesdayites agree with his on-the-whistle analysis?

Here’s a snapshot of what they’re saying on Twitter following tonight’s defeat in the Potteries.

@TomTB1995 Windass should have been on the pitch earlier, unfortunate having to take Dunkley off. Big game Saturday now, must have that same intensity that we had against Wycombe.

@Hill7Conor Controversial tweet.. But I tell you what I wouldn't mind going down. Start a fresh get rid of all the big earners that aren't interested! Get some young fresh faces in that will actually want to play for the shirt show some passion heart and want to prove themselves!

@George97_Swfc Six pointer again Saturday.

@johnada75157425 Sheffield Wednesday showing we can’t do it away at Stoke on a cold Tuesday night.

@swfcsc Genuinely thought we were unlucky tonight. We faded in the second half and they got stronger after our substitutions. We move on to Saturday.

@WednesdayRetro No creativity. No chances created, hard to win games when these don’t exist in football.

@SWFCSteveBrown Bannan some days looks like he was born in Brazil, sadly as he’s getting older it’s more like Bellshill.

@mattbaines75 Where’s was the fight tonight? Them sleeves gone back down. Position we’re in it’s got to be a fight every game and it wasn’t there tonight - get em rolled back up for Saturday.

@Trigger1410 Thompson isn’t up for the job, sorry to upset the happy clappers, thanks for trying though Neil.

@richtremix Get Urhoghide a new contract!! Brilliant today again! Here's pure class.

@SWFC1867_Polls Oh well… Basically how I feel right now with this club. Apathy. What is there to get excited about with the club? Seriously! Can someone name one thing that is something to get excited about?

@docsavage1975 Thommo has clearly done well since taking control BUT what triggers a thought process that concludes when losing 1-0 in the 83rd minute bringing Pelupessy and Kachunga on is they way to turn the game around. The mind boggles.
