Shaw earned himself plenty of plaudits earlier in the month with his impressive showing against Exeter City in the Third Round, so it was a shock to many when the matchday squad was released without his name on it. Wednesday went on to lose 3-0 to the Toffees as their opponent’s Premier League quality shone through.

While the 19-year-old wasn’t present, there was still a young contingent in Neil Thompson’s starting XI as Ciaran Brennan, Ryan Galvin and Osaze Urhoghide got the nod, and Thompson has now explained that Shaw is dealing with a shoulder injury that ultimately stopped his participation in tonight’s game.

He told the media, "Liam missed a couple of days training with his shoulder, and - like a lot of players who have been missing - we’ve got other issues at the club as you know. We’ve got to deal with that, and hopefully we’ll have a few more available next week.”

Meanwhile, the Owls had a number of other key players out due to injury, with the likes of Keiran Westwood, Chey Dunkley and Tom Lees also missing in action at Goodison, and ‘Thommo’ admits that he’s hoping that at least a few of them will be able to put themselves in contention for the midweek clash against Coventry City.

"We’re hopeful that we’ll have a couple of them back. We’re back in training tomorrow, so the lads will rest up who played today and see state they’re in in terms of recovery. The rest will do a little bit of work, and we’ll see how far down the line others are. We need as many players back as quickly as we can.

“But we have a duty of care to everybody to make sure their fitness is right, and that they’re in the right condition to play games.”
