Attempts were made behind the scenes but as time went on it became apparent they were struggling to add to the free transfer additions of Andre Green and Sam Hutchinson.

Crewe left-back Harry Pickering, who the Owls are believed to have tabled a bid for, completed his expected £650,000 move to Blackburn Rovers and will be loaned back to the League One club for the rest of the campaign.

Loan enquiries for Cardiff winger Josh Murphy were disappointed early on in the day, with the 26-year-old having stepped back into first team contention since the appointment of Mick McCarthy late last month.

Even more frustrating for Owls fans is that several of their relegation rivals were able to bring in new signings.

On the outgoing front, negotiations to take Jordan Rhodes to Cardiff City fell flat, while Alex Hunt’s much-discussed loan move to one of his League One admirers never materialised.

Hunt’s fellow youngster Conor Grant made a permanent move to Rochdale in what was the only bit of business to be completed involving Wednesday.
