The Owls released a statement on Monday evening confirming the 62-year-old’s departure after just 45 days and 10 games in charge at Hillsborough.

Pulis secured just one win after taking over from Garry Monk in November, and leaves Wednesday with the club still in the relegation zone.

Discussing the dismissal on Sky Sports’ Football Show, however, both Mills and fellow pundit Gabby Agbonlahor suggested that the veteran boss should have been given more time to make his mark on the Owls’ squad.

The latter said: “Well, the Sheffield Wednesday owners are renowned for it [sacking managers], aren’t they?

"I just feel he needed a window. Yes, one win in 10 games is not a great record, but January’s nearly here. Give him a little bit of money to spend, maybe a few loan signings, and then give him five or six games to see what he can do.

"I just feel that to keep changing your manager is not good for the players, and it’s something that you expect now from Wednesday.”

Mills agreed with the former Aston Villa striker, while also arguing that Wednesday could struggle to find a suitable replacement for the ousted Pulis.

“It’s a difficult one”, he said.

"They gave Garry Monk a go – that didn’t work. Same group of players, you bring in a very experienced manager who’s been there, seen it, done it, got teams out of trouble before – he couldn’t get a tune out of that team.

"Where do you go next? It’s precarious. Any manager going in is going to be thinking, ‘If I don’t do well after five games I’m going to get the sack’.

"That’s not going to be easy. That may limit their choices, but there’ll be a young manager out there somewhere and I’m sure they will jump at the chance to manage the club, but it’s a very very difficult situation, and again, how much money will they be given to improve that squad in the transfer window?

"It’s not a coincidence that two managers have failed with the same squad, so maybe you have to start thinking that it’s maybe not just the managers, but the players have got to look at themselves as well.”
