The high-flying Tykes, who are in fifth place and will be looking to extend an incredible run of nine wins in 10 matches at Oakwell, will find out whether their captain Alex Mowatt will be available to play in the fixture.

Mowatt, a former Leeds United midfielder, was sent off in their 3-1 win over Wycombe on Wednesday evening and faces a three-match ban, though it has been appealed.

Speaking passionately after the match, their manager Valerian Ismael said: “It was never a bad foul – he tackled over the ball without a straight leg and that’s why we can’t accept this and we have to fight against that.”

It has since been confirmed that Barnsley have appealed the decision and will find out by 6pm as to the verdict.

Mowatt, who has been in excellent form throughout Barnsley’s extraordinary run, could stand to miss three matches if the ban in upheld.

“We did everything, we filled everything for the appeal and we will have a response today before six,” said Ismael, a former Bayern Munich centre-half.

“We did our job with the club, with [CEO] Dane Murphy and now we have to wait. For us now it’s no excuse or complaint. We stay focused on the next game, all the players are ready, we have all the players available for the last game before the break.

“It doesn’t matter whether he’s on the pitch tomorrow.

“Yes for sure if Alex Mowatt not play, it would be a big loss for us, but our motivation is so big to do the last effort before the international break. We made an incredible performance and commitment so far and all our focus is to have the right mentality to attack the game against Sheffield Wednesday.

“Alex knows he didn’t do something wrong. He is frustrated. It is unjust. But we will have to accept any decision.”

Barnsley won the corresponding fixture at Hillsborough 2-1 back in December and will be looking to seal a first double over Wednesday since the 2008/09 season.
