The much improved display will give Monk plenty of encouragement ahead of Saturday’s trip to high-flying Brentford and on the back of a disappointing sequence of results which has seen them slip to 12th in the Championship. But with Pep Guardiola’s star-studded squad in town, a plethora of some of Fleet Street’s finest were at S6 for the big game. So what did they make of Wednesday’s performance?
5. The Independent
The Independent's headline was somewhat longer that its counterparts with it opting for 'Holders Manchester City advance to FA Cup quarter finals as Sergio Aguero sinks Sheffield Wednesday'. Its reporter at the game Richard Jolly felt Garry Monk's side had restored pride following their woeful run, writing: "Sheffield Wednesday emerged with reputation enhanced and dignity intact, a team on the slide in the Championship playing with renewed resolve as they only conceded once and restricted the holders to no shots on target in the first half." 6. The Daily Telegraph
The Telegraph's headline read 'Sergio Aguero puts profligate Manchester City through to meet Newcastle in quarter-final', with its reporter at the game Jason Burt highlighted the Owls' battling qualities. He said: "Despite being a struggling Championship side, on an appalling run of form and with an uncertain future amid a possible points deduction for alleged financial irregularities and in a half-empty Hillsborough, Wednesday defended well with midfielder Barry Bannan impressing." 7. The Daily Star
The Daily Star, like its tabloid rival the Mirror, focused on Sergio Aguero's comments about Pep Guardiola and ran with the headline 'Sergio Aguero brands Pep Guardiola 'crazy' after netting Man City winner in FA Cup'. Its reporter Duncan Robinson made little reference to Wednesday but did point to the City boss 'taking no chances at Hillsborough by fielding a strong starting 11'. Photo: Clive Brunskill
8. The Daily Express
The Express ran with a headline which simply read 'Sergio Aguero sets up Newcastle FA Cup quarter-final tie'. Reporter Jamie Anderson also honed in on Joe Wildsmith's performance in the Wednesday goal, writing: "Wildsmith kept out Riyad Mahrez's shot as City chased a second, while Wednesday had failed to muster an effort on target in the second half before Alex Hunt's rare ball into City's box just eluded fellow substitute Steven Fletcher.
