The Argentina-born forward is into his final months at Wednesday and in midweek played his fifth-consecutive match for the Owls for the first time since May 2018.

Monk, who inherited a suspended Forestieri and through injury has had to wait to fully integrate him into his plans, said he was impressed by his determination after he played a starring role in the Owls’ 1-0 win over Charlton.

Asked whether he is playing himself into a new deal, the Wednesday boss said: “It’s the same with everyone. They need to perform. They need to fight hard and show that attitude and show what they can do, everything we know they can do, but do it consistently.

“Fernando is getting his run of games and I think he’s done very well since he came back.

“He’s had a stop-start season, he was suspended at the start then there was that injury that he came through, he’s not had a fluid season.

“But he’s come back from that injury with a really good attitude. The only thing he’s been unlucky with is goals tonight. He had some great opportunities.”

His is a contribution not lost on the players either, according to Steven Fletcher. The big Scot paid tribute to the effort made by Forestieri – one of the club’s highest paid players – defensively as well as in attack.

“The wee man has come into form and he's working very hard for the team,” Fletcher said.

“You always like to see a Fernando that's running around because that's when he's at his best; he'll run around, he'll win the ball back for you high up the pitch, he's very good at that.

“The chances will come, they are coming, it's just a matter of taking them and he will take them.

“Everyone knows how good he is but it's about hard work.”
