What Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk said about his players' attitude and commitment ahead of Nottingham Forest clash

Sheffield Wednesday manager Garry Monk has urged his under-fire players to replicate their attitude on the training pitch against high-flying Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough on Saturday – just a week after questioning the dressing room culture.

Monk pulled no punches when he said the club would ‘never be successful’ until the ‘deep-rooted culture’ changes following the 5-0 drubbing at Brentford last week.

The humiliating defeat – the Owls’ ninth in 14 Championship matches – left the manager feeling the most ‘embarrassed I've ever felt in football’.

But speaking ahead of the Forest game, Monk said he was hopeful his players will deliver ‘on what we’ve worked on this week’ in training.

“It has to be here and now but we’ve been saying that for a few weeks,” said the 41-year-old.

“But there’s a few things we’ve been working on this week that I feel can help the team and very hopeful that comes out in the game on Saturday with the players delivering on what we’ve worked on this week.

“Hopefully that will bring us much closer to the level of performance that we need to be competitive in a game like this against an opponent that is right up there at the top of the league.

“We need to be and I’m very hopeful that if we can put on what we’ve been working on this week into practice at a good level, then we should get the performance we need.”

However, the manager acknowledged there had been false dawns after encouraging displays against Birmingham City and Charlton Athletic last month.

“We’ve hit certain levels throughout this period, some better than others obviously, but the consistency hasn’t been there," he said.

“We have no other choice right now to do something about it.

“As I said, my job is to try and help the team.

“I’ve been working on some things that I think can help the team reach their levels and help us do something about it and obviously the players themselves, the commitment to it – they have been very good this week – and hopefully the proof will be in the performance on Saturday.”
