What Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk said about the extension of Cameron Dawson's contract

The 24-year-old, who has stepped in to the gloves of long-time number one Keiren Westwood in recent months, signed a four-and-a-half year contract with his boyhood club amid reported interest from both Celtic and Rangers as well as a host of Wednesday’s Championship rivals.

And Monk, who questioned the character of several squad members after his side’s 2-1 defeat at relegation-threatened Wigan Athletic on Tuesday, suggested the stopper embodies what the club needs to become under his leadership.

“I am glad it has come to a conclusion and I'm glad he is here,” he said.

“These are the type of players you need to build around; young, hungry players.

“He has got the desire to do well and the right attitude, so we are delighted with that.”

Speaking ahead of their Wigan humbling, Dawson said: “I’m delighted to get it done.

“I always said I wanted to get it done and boxed-off and really concentrate on the football.

“It didn’t particularly play on my mind but obviously I was aware that things having being going on over the last couple of weeks.

“To get it done can only be positive and hopefully now we can put some results together on the pitch.

“I’ve had a while in and around it but the last couple of months have been a real high in my Sheffield Wednesday career. To now get this sorted and commit my long-term future, I’m delighted.”
