Millwall manager Gary Rowett admitted the lack of quality displayed by both sides in their 0-0 draw with Sheffield Wednesday contributed to a ‘subdued atmosphere’ at Hillsborough.

Rowett, who’s resurgent Lions have charged into contention for the play-offs and leave S6 two points and two places above their hosts, made it clear he wasn’t criticising the home fans on an afternoon he admitted was ‘difficult to watch’.

A late chance spurned by Millwall’s Jan Dadi Bödvarsson and a glancing first-half header for Adam Reach were the only chances in a dour encounter.

“It was quite a quiet atmosphere in some ways and I’m not blaming the home fans for that,” he said.

“But it was quite subdued atmosphere and that was maybe because of the quality of the game.

“In the last five minutes ours got behind us to see if they could help us grab a point. It was a difficult game all round.”

Rowett also believed the performance of referee David Coote contributed to a quiet day out watching a bitty game.

“It was a difficult game to manage because they were doing it, we were doing it.

“It just broke any sort of momentum in the game. One minute we’re complaining about a decision, the next minute they’re complaining about a decision. It wasn’t easy for him.

“I think he gave almost too many decisions, but it didn’t stop the quality happening, it didn’t stop the composure, but it did make for quite a difficult game to watch.”
