Sergio Aguero scored the winner eight minutes into the second-half to book a quarter-final tie against Newcastle United.

The Owls put in a spirited perfomaance against the current Premier League champions and almost equalised late on through Steven Fletcher.

“It was a difficult game,” Stones said.

“They played a lot of direct balls that caused us a lot of problems and we knew it would be a big challenge.

“From my experience of these games when you come down to play a good team in another league it is never an easy night and you can’t think anything different.

“We worked hard all week in a short space of time to work on what Sheffield Wednesday had, what they could bring against us.

“It was a tight game right until the end and we are happy to be through to the next round.”

He added: “When it is a cup game it brings a different occasion and the best out of everyone and that is what happens.

“It is always different when you face this kind of opposition so we were on our game tonight and we got the job done.

“They played with five at the back which always makes it harder but I felt like we dealt really well with the occasion, with the pitch, and we played the game the best we could.”
