The club’s record signing, who belted a first-half hat-trick in that 4-0 win at Nottingham Forest, will hope the point-blank finish will stand him in good stead as he attempts to get his Owls career going at the outset of his final year under contract.

Fellow strike partner Josh Windass was impressive and also claimed a goal in a match that saw all three strikers used with Elias Kachunga used to good effect from the bench.

Asked of Rhodes’ contribution, Monk spoke of his pleasure in the forward’s goal while making clear the the club’s search for added firepower goes on, though ‘nothing is imminent’.

The win took Wednesday to minus-nine points.

“I am delighted for Jordan,” he said. “He has worked incredibly hard and got his goal. That will give him great confidence.

“Everyone wants him to do well but there is competition. I thought Adam and Kacha when they came on were excellent when we needed that energy.

“We are not fully match sharp yet and there was a bit of rustiness there. I thought the unity and mentality shone through in the final stages. We were very comfortable and kept working hard right to the final whistle.

“There were really good signs but we have to be ready for everything. We still need to improve and that's what we will keep working on every day.”
