What Garry Monk said about 'the bigger picture' and the need to turn things around fast at Sheffield Wednesday after defeat at Luton Town

The Owls have taken five points from the last 27 available and sit seven points shy of the play-off places with 14 matches remaining.

And speaking after their latest disappointment, a 1-0 midweek defeat at rock-bottom Luton Town, Monk made clear he understands that their recent run of form is not good enough.

“I said from the start, it’s a big job,” he said.

“The ultimate is of course what happens on a football pitch but of course there are things that have gone on or I’ve seen that I’ve told you about that I don’t like and need to change.

“That’s the bigger picture side of it but the here and now, the industry that we live in, the life that I lead, I understand it, it’s instant.

“Everyone wants success instantly and you have to win consistently now, regardless of the situation and what you think needs to change or whatever. I totally understand that.

“I haven’t been able to do that in these last eight or nine games and that’s not good enough.”

Asked whether he was concerned that any future planning would be overlooked given their current malaise, he said:

“That’s normal. The big picture always gets overlooked. No one cares about the big picture, it’s about the here and now and that’s the way football is run now.

“I’m fully aware of that and I have big experience of that. But I’ll fight, I’ve always done that, I’ll fight for this club and this team and these players I’ve got here and I’ve give them all I’ve got.

“I’ve done that from day one and I’ll continue to do that. But what you need as well is for them to believe in themselves and to push themselves out of that period we’re in we know as well as anyone it can change and you’re on a different path.”
