Wickham moved to Hillsborough from Crystal Palace on deadline day, agreeing a temporary switch designed to give him much-needed game time following an injury-plagued spell at Selhurst Park.

It’s the third time the forward has rocked up on loan at S6 during his career and while the initial plan this time around is to aid a full recovery, the 26-year-old is certainly not against the idea of an extended stay – even if it’s still a case of ‘wait and see’.

Speaking ahead of today’s short trip to Barnsley, where Wickham is expected to make another debut for the Owls, he said: “(Staying on) depends on the situation at the time and what’s on the table.

“I still have a year left at Palace. I think the intention is to go back to Palace - the chairman has made that quite clear to me.

“As far as I’m concerned from Crystal Palace’s side I’m here to get development and what happens after that we’ll see.”

On the challenge facing him today at Oakwell, Wickham sees it as a good opportunity for Garry Monk’s side to drag themselves back into the chase for a play-off place having picked up one point from their last three games.

“It’s going to be a big game, he said. “It’s going to be a big game for them and a big game for us.

“We just have to make sure we’re the ones who come away with the three points.

“That would get us out of the small spell we’re in at the minute and hopefully we can build the momentum.”

Wickham added: “I feel ready. I played a few games for Palace, but when you play 10 or 15 minutes it isn’t great when you’re trying to build up your game time.

“I played 90 minutes against Derby in the cup and felt fine after that. That small period of game time has done me well.

“Getting a goal against Norwich was good for me. Onwards and upwards hopefully.”
