Attacking midfielder Adam Reach believes Sheffield Wednesday are genuine promotion contenders this season.

Jos Luhukay's team dug deep to grind out a draw at home to high-flying Leeds United in front of the TV cameras on Friday night.

Although the Owls dropped three places to 12th after the weekend's results, the Hillsborough club remain only two points shy of the Championship play-off positions.

Reach, who scored a stunning volley on the stroke of half-time against Leeds, said: "I think we have shown we can challenge for the top six. Without a doubt.

“Look at our overall performances, they have been very good. Blips such as Wigan and Brentford, which ended up being wake-up calls.

“We have come pretty far since the start of the season. It took us time to bed in with formations and our positional play.”

Three-goal Reach has spoken of his relief over Wednesday securing a point against their Yorkshire rivals Leeds. The Owls were second best for long periods after the restart as the Whites dominated possession and created the bulk of the chances.

"Even though we drew from a winning position, the dressing room was a happy one afterwards," said Reach. "You always want to win your home games but we are not blind. Everyone could see that Leeds dominated and had a lot of chances in the second half so we could easily have lost that game.

“We are still unbeaten at home and there is another game here on Wednesday. That (West Bromwich Albion) will be a completely different game again. We have to look to dominate due to being at home."

Despite his wonder Leeds strike, Reach thinks he will miss out on the September goal of the month award.

The 25-year-old said: "I don’t think mine will get it. (on whether gets goal of month)

“The Villa goal by [John] McGinn was really special, especially the technique he used."
