Monk was dismissed just 48 hours after his side’s 0-0 draw with Millwall, a result which lifted the Owls off the foot of the Sky Bet Championship.

The 41-year-old former Swansea City, Leeds United, Middlesbrough and Birmingham City boss was appointed Wednesday manager in September 2019.

He is also followed out of the Hillsborough exit door by his coaching staff, the club has confirmed.

In a statement released on Monday evening, chairman Dejphon Chansiri said: “I feel the time is right to make a change and I wish Garry and his team all the best for the future.

“I would like to say thank you for the time and effort Garry and his staff have committed to Sheffield Wednesday.”

The club’s poor start to the season, which saw them lose four games on the bounce including defeats to Rotherham United and Wycombe Wanderers, came on the back of the 12-point deduction (subsequently reduced to six points) handed down by the EFL for breaching spending rules and had led to calls for Monk to be sacked by sections of the Wednesday fanbase.

Here’s how Wednesdayites on Twitter have reacted to tonight’s huge news from S6.

@TheThinker90 I’m sort of surprised that Monk has gone, I’m glad he has, think we have a decent squad, but not utilised properly by Monk. Will Bullen now take it after being out of the main squad and with the under 23’s? Not sure who I would like though. #swfc

@DavidWardyWard Slightly surprised but the right decision, the form for 12 months has been nothing short of appalling. Get big Nige. #SWFC #WAWAW

@JoshTNaughton Get the ginger Pep back in. Megson all day long... #SWFC

@LeeJFisher1 Sacking Monk was an absolute no-brainer. 2020 has been absolutely dreadful. Two home wins, three opposition players are the top scorers at Hillsborough. It couldn't go on. Credit Chansiri on this one. #swfc

@Ozzie23079532 First Biden now this...if Carlsberg did weeks #swfc

@_hazzy First thing new gaffer wants to do is get Westwood back training with 1st team, ready to register him to play in January, not bothered what he done or who he upset, grown men getting paid to do a job, so suck it up and get on with it #swfc

@rwn1992 100% happened at the right time if it was ever going to happen. Hopefully we get someone in with experience, can’t see who we’re going to get though #swfc
