'We’re the next Sunderland' - angry Sheffield Wednesday fans' verdict on second half collapse at Luton Town

Sheffield Wednesday’s woeful season plumbed new depths this afternoon after letting slip a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 against Luton Town at Kenilworth Road.

The Owls had led 2-0 through Josh Windass’ brace after a dominant first half showing but were condemned to a fourth successive Championship after goals from Kal Naismith, Ryan Tunnifcliffe and Elijah Adebayo completed a remarkable turnaround for the hosts to heap more misery on Neil Thompson’s relegation-threatened side.

It means Thompson’s men will head into Wednesday’s huge South Yorkshire derby against Rotherham United at Hillsborough six points from safety as the season heads into the final straight.

"Up until today I genuinely thought Wednesday would be fine, but after that I’m not so sure…" wrote our Wednesday correspondent Joe Crann on Twitter.

“The manner of that collapse was so depressing, and showed the fragility of where they’re at. Real Jekyll and Hyde.

“Fourteen games to go, and it’s going to take a major effort to survive this now.”

But what did shell-shocked Wednesdayites make of today’s capitulation?

Here’s a snapshot of their views on Twitter.

@wawaw_69 I reckon that decides it. We’re not capable of a relegation battle. We’re the next Sunderland.

@hollybarra85 If there's ever a team you can rely on to redeem your bad run it's #SWFC

@EuseOwl That’s it - today’s the day I’ll recognise Sheffield Wednesday are relegated to League One for the third time in two decades. We simply aren’t good enough to stay up and today was the epitome of that. Also, we’ll be most expensive tickets ever for League One.

@_Baz95 No team in any league in the world deserves to get relegated more than us right now.

@chris_brookes Feel genuine feelings of hate for what’s been allowed to happen at this club as time’s gone on. Reckless and negligent. A dangerous unwillingness to listen to the right advice. Gradually ripped the soul out of it.

@waynejackson84 I actually give in, I'm not watching it anymore. See you all next year when we're in League One.

@NewYorkOwls We'll look back at where we were at HT today at the end of the season and think what could've been. Out of the relegation spots. Forty-five minutes later, we're six points from safety. Those 45 minutes have relegated us and every player on the pitch should be ashamed.

@twiggypete81 This is just becoming ridiculous . . . complete clear out needed and start again in League One.

@DalePask_You can't blame chairman for that second half performance. That’s on the players. That squad should be good enough to beat Luton.

@JamesPymSWFC Gutting to lose after being 2-0 up. Massive game against Rotherham, Wednesday. Think if we fail to win, that’s us as good as down.
