The former Aston Villa winger has been thrown straight into the mix following his arrival at Hillsborough on a free transfer earlier in the transfer window.

Elsewhere, Julian Börner is back while there’s also a start for young defender Osaze Urhoghide – but there is no place in the matchday squad for Liam Shaw, who produced a stunning man of the match display in the 2-0 victory over Exeter City in the previous round.

Tonight’s game against Carlo Ancelotti’s Toffeemen is the Owls’s first since the third round win against the Grecians due to a Covid-19 outbreak which led to the postponement of league games against Coventry City and Wycombe Wanderers.

So how have Wednesdayites reacted to Thompson’s team selection against the Premier League high-flyers?

Let’s take a look at what they’re saying on Twitter.

@owlsmadmorris Fearing the worst defensively, hope to be proven wrong

@saint_sam90 What's Matt Penney got to do to get a start?

@JamesKay89 So Hutchinson is basically a replacement for Liam Shaw

@Dobson_dobsinho Trying to be optimistic about that line up but can see us being done by five or six here

@clurrrrxhx No Shaw a noticeable miss but what a start for Brennan, Gavin and Urhoghide, go out there and enjoy it lads. Come on Wednesday

@MattHall1974 Got to fear the worst for a very youthful back line for #swfc against a front three of Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin and Rodriguez

@BigAl_simon Just seen the Everton lineup, this could get very ugly

@antonio_nespoli We’re going to get absolutely bossed here

@haddington All that talk in the build up and we pick a team like that. We could get hammered looking at Everton’s line up.

@Dadders Four of the back five for #swfc tonight come out of the academy, with another four on the bench. Clear where the priorities lie.
