SHEFFIELD Wednesday face a race against time as they bid to make new signings in time for the season’s start next Saturday.

Release of the squad numbers suggests that the Owls still hope to add the three players being sought by Gary Megson.

The number eight, nine and 10 shirts have yet to be allocated.

Megson is on record as saying that he wants two extra forwards and a wide man.

This week he landed his final centre-half target by bringing Danny Batth back on loan from Wolves.

Although the Owls manager has made five signings this summer, seven players have gone since the end of last season. A week before the League One campaign opens with the visit of Rochdale, the squad contains only 18 outfield players, plus three goalkeepers.

Minor fitness niggles have also had an impact on pre-season games.

Lewis Buxton and Julian Bennett are back in training after sitting out the friendly at Barnsley on Tuesday, and Clinton Morrison is due to join in shortly.

David Prutton was given leave from the Oakwell match because his baby daughter was ill. Megson is likely to want to field his strongest possible side against Stoke at Hillsborough today (1pm) in the final warm-up game.

Reda Johnson is a doubt after twisting a knee at Barnsley, but Megson in any case will probably want to return to the centre back partnership of Batth and captain Rob Jones.

n Squad numbers: 1 Nicky Weaver, 2 Lewis Buxton, 3 Julian Bennett, 4 Danny Batth, 5 Rob Jones, 6 Jose Semedo, 7 David Prutton, 11 Jermaine Johnson, 12 Liam Palmer, 13 Mark Beevers, 14 Gary Madine, 15 Chris Sedgwick, 16 James O’Connor, 17 Reda Johnson, 18 Mark Reynolds, 19 Clinton Morrison, 20 Jon Otsemobor, 21 Daniel Jones, 22 Giles Coke, 23 Richard O’Donnell, 24 Arron Jameson.

n Wednesday play at Alfreton Town tomorrow (kick-off 2pm).

The team will probably be youthful, in line with recent friendlies against non-League clubs.
