Sheffield Wednesday were beaten comfortably by Hartlepool United in the Papa John’s Trophy.

The Owls were expected to make a number of changes as Darren Moore shuffled the pack once again this evening, and he did just that as only three players from the Wycombe Wanderers game retained their place.

Wednesday had some good history against Hartlepool – most famously in the 2005 Play-Off final – and hadn’t lost to them since a 3-0 defeat away from home that same year. That changed at Hillsborough as they were beaten by the same scoreline – this time at home.

It was one to forget for Moore and his players, and they’ll be keen to move on from it as soon as possible.

Sheffield Wednesday v Hartlepool United - Owls look to progress in Papa John’s Trophy

Key Events

  • Wednesday have some good memories against Hartlepool
  • The Owls are on an unbeaten run at home that has lasted eight games
  • Darren Moore has made plenty of changes

The Owls are 2-0 down after an awful Brown pass back to Wildsmith. Horrendous goal to concede, and Wednesday are in trouble now.

And Hartlepool lead...

It’s been coming to be fair... Poor Wednesday start, they couldn’t clear the corner from a Brennan backpass and Shelton puts them into the lead. 1-0.

Nice work from Paterson showing some good footwork before getting a shot off... It’s deflected out for a corner, which is then cleared.

Hartlepool have been the brighter of the two sides... Wednesday sloppy in possession, and have given the ball away a lot already.

Hartlepool had a bit of possession but didn’t do much with it... They had a corner that was easily dealt with.

Wednesday now getting into a bit more - Shodipo’s cross goes out for a goalkick.

As expected, it’s a 3-5-2 from Wednesday... Jaden Brown on the left of the three, with Callum Paterson on the right and Ciaran Brennan central.

Things are underway at Hillsborough. Hartlepool kicking towards the Kop.

Moore makes eight changes to the XI that started against Wycombe, with only Callum Paterson, Ciaran Brennan and Olamide Shodipo retain their place - youngsters Josh Render, David Agbontohoma, Liam Waldock and Korede Adedoyin make the bench.

No Nathaniel Mendez-Laing in the side - we’ll find out why later tonight.
