'We would have capitulated under Monk' - Sheffield Wednesday fans react to Reading draw

He became the Owls’ fifth player to be sent off this season after referee Oliver Langford showed him a straight red for a robust tackle on Omar Richards on the half-hour mark.

His dismissal came after Calum Paterson had given Tony Pulis’ side the lead with a superb header at the far post following a great ball into the box from Adam Reach.

Former Wednesday man Lucas Joao equalised on the stroke of half-time for the Royals, who were unable to breach the home side’s defence in the second half and had several shouts for penalties – including what looked like a clear handball by Reach in the final minutes of the game.

The draw leaves Pulis’ side without a win in his opening four games in the Hillsborough hotseat, although they have drawn three of those matches, and remain in the relegation zone four points adrift of safety.

Our Owls correspondent, Joe Crann, wrote on Twitter after the game: “Superb defence effort from #SWFC here, but I think they’ve probably got a bit lucky in terms of penalties…”
