'We would have capitulated under Monk' - Sheffield Wednesday fans react to Reading draw

Sheffield Wednesday produced a superb defensive display to secure a share of the spoils against Reading at Hillsborough this evening – despite playing with 10 men for an hour following Liam Shaw’s red card.

He became the Owls’ fifth player to be sent off this season after referee Oliver Langford showed him a straight red for a robust tackle on Omar Richards on the half-hour mark.

His dismissal came after Calum Paterson had given Tony Pulis’ side the lead with a superb header at the far post following a great ball into the box from Adam Reach.

Former Wednesday man Lucas Joao equalised on the stroke of half-time for the Royals, who were unable to breach the home side’s defence in the second half and had several shouts for penalties – including what looked like a clear handball by Reach in the final minutes of the game.

The draw leaves Pulis’ side without a win in his opening four games in the Hillsborough hotseat, although they have drawn three of those matches, and remain in the relegation zone four points adrift of safety.

Our Owls correspondent, Joe Crann, wrote on Twitter after the game: “Superb defence effort from #SWFC here, but I think they’ve probably got a bit lucky in terms of penalties…”

Here's the views of Wednesdayites on Twitter following tonight’s draw at S6.

@philcooper15 Under Monk we’d have lost that by three or four after the sending off, say what you want about Pulis but he gets them organised and makes them put a shift in #swfc

@liamkay1986 Held on for the draw. A good point all things considered. Wildsmith was top draw. Trying to be positive but we are so bad to watch right now

@JesusLedger We will not go down! #swfc

@mickenell Ill-discipline in our team rears its ugly head once again. Sloppy decision-making in general is causing it. Part of the legacy Monk has left us with. We have one of the best managers to sort that out I feel in Pulis. We go again on Saturday away to Norwich. UTO! #swfc

@yana1867 Take away the non-penalties that Sky Sports and their presenters are obsessed with (and they should have had a couple, don’t get me wrong). How many chances did Reading have in open play against 10 man #swfc

@matt_h4 Some shift from the Wednesday boys tonight. It's easy to complain and give stick to players for under-performing but you have to applaud and be proud that they didn't fold tonight. Fingers crossed the red cards are gone now and we can give ourselves a chance. #swfc #wawaw

@richygill82 We would have capitulated under Monk - good point considering

@michael_1867 I can see lots of moaning about decisions that Reading didn’t get. How about the big one that they DID get; the free kick which led to their goal?! Never been a free kick! #swfc

@AbbasArezoo Vaccine on the way. Pulis getting the lads grafting. It’s all falling into place. #swfc
