Sheffield Wednesday lost to the Championship's bottom club Bolton Wanderers on Saturday and while the performance was bleak, they were a denied a potential point by the referee.

Late in the game with the Owls 2-1 down to a team yet to win this season, Kieran Lee went down in the box under a challenge from David Wheater.

The Bolton defender looked to have left a leg dangling as Lee raced through and at first look it appeared as though referee David Coote, officiating in his first Championship game this season, would award a spot kick.

To the bemusement of most inside the ground, Coote pulled out a yellow card and booked Lee for diving.

Owls head coach Carlos Carvalhal said afterwards: "It was a massive mistake," he added. "And I don't understand why. I am sure everyone agrees with me. You all saw it. If the Bolton fans are honest they will say it was a clear penalty. And Kieran Lee never dives in that situation. It is a clear penalty and red card."
