Wait goes on for Sheffield Wednesday supporters.. but when is the next Tier judgement?

And it’s a stretch of time that will only increase after it was confirmed that Sheffield would remain a ‘Tier 3’ region as part of their response to the coronavirus crisis.

Wednesday supporters last saw their team play at home in a 1-0 defeat to Manchester City on March 4, before an away trip in front of fans at Brentford three days later.

The Tier restrictions will be reviewed in a fortnight. It means, at the very least, home clashes with Coventry City – on Saturday – and Middlesbrough – on December 29 – will be played in front of empty terraces at S6.

The ruling means that the Owls’ away trip to Blackburn Rovers on Boxing Day will also remain behind closed doors.

The Star reported earlier this week that Wednesday were working closely with local authorities to prepare for the safe return of spectators, though according to Mayor of Sheffield Dan Jarvis, the lifting or easing of restrictions in the region was never likely. Plans will continue to be made as the club look ahead to a future date.

A total of 109,167 people tested positive for Covid-19 in England at least once in the week to December 9, according to the latest Test and Trace figures.

This is up 12% on the previous week but is still below the peak weekly total of 168,535 recorded in the seven days to November 11.
