The Owls dragged themselves through a goalless draw with Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town, after which Monk admitted to The Star that some players were playing through strains in order to get through the rest of the season.

Next up is a trip to promotion hopefuls Fulham, where Monk hopes he will be able to reintroduce the injured trio, who have each missed the last two games altogether.

“It's just a day by day thing with them, that soreness,” he said.

"There's a few that a right on that red line, there are knocks and strains and bruises. And that's with all of them. A lot of those lads are playing with strains and knocks and bruises and fatigue and things like that.

“But they're digging in. It's hard because you want to win every game and then you play brilliant like we did at the weekend, you want that every single game, but it's hard.

"Quick turnaround, Huddersfield had an extra day on us but I still feel that we looked stronger than them physically, we matched them definitely. It's about now getting those players recovered and hopefully they'll be back for the weekend.”

Wednesday recorded their second clean sheet on the spin and Monk said the improvements of the post-break period are there for all to see.

The season finishes next week with the visit of Middlesbrough and will complete a run of eight matches in just 24 days.

“It’s tough, it’s tough going for all these lads,” he said. “But they’re giving it their all. We’ve had some disappointments in this period but overall we’ve definitely seen an improvement from what we saw before the break.

“It’s a tough situation physically for us but I’ve been pleased with them.

“But we kept going, the attitude is there, the spirit is there and those improvements are there.”
