VIDEO: Sheffield Wednesday starlet Matt Penney urged to stay grounded

Rising star Matt Penney has been told to "keep his feet on the ground" following an impressive start to his Wednesday career.

The left-sided player has burst on to the scene in the 2018/19 campaign, making five starts and two substitute appearances.

Penney, who has been on the club's books since the age of eight, produced an outstanding performance in the left wing back role as the Owls claimed a 2-1 win at Aston Villa last weekend.

Wednesday boss Jos Luhukay said: "Internally, we are trying to keep his feet on the ground. We see Matt's development. We see the progression.

"But he is at the beginning of his young career in the Championship. He has a long future ahead of him.

"He must try to work every day to come to good performances and we try to help him with that."

Penney has made great strides but Luhukay is confident the praise and attention he has received in recent weeks will not go to the youngster's head.

"He is a cool boy; a very good character," said Luhukay. "I don't have that feeling (the hype will affect him).

"When I have that feeling, I (would) take him out of the team for a couple of games to bring him back to the bottom or so that he stays in his shoes and not outside of his shoes.

"I enjoy what our young, academy players are doing to come into the first-team. It motivates me also to help these young players come to a good future with Sheffield Wednesday."

The 20-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season.

On the prospect of offering Penney a new deal, Luhukay said: "It is not the time to talk about that.

"The focus must be on Leeds United, who are number one in the league, and then West Bromwich Albion. That must be the focus and after we have Bristol City.

"We have a little bit of rest with the international and then we can maybe think about that."
