The Brewers hugely defensive set-up frustrated a Wednesday side who had just a few days previous hammered five past Norwich City at the same venue.

Burton, who are hovering over the relegation zone in their first season in the Championship, are desperate for points and it was clear that they were more than happy to take one from Hillsborough.

And Clough, who praised his side's dogged determination to keep the Owls at bay, said there 'would have been no point' in Burton opening up and pushing for all three points - as Norwich did on Saturday.

"We defended magnificently to a man," said Clough. "We did everything we could to stop them and tried to be a threat but it's very difficult when (Wednesday) control the game as much as they do. They've just put five past a very good team so there was no point us coming here and playing open expansive football. We make no apologies for how we have to play."

The fact that it took just eight minutes for Burton to equalise, was crucial admitted the former Sheffield United boss.

It gave us the belief straight back and the onus was on Sheffield Wednesday to break us down. I thought we were a threat in first 15 20 minutes. The goal set us back, we got back into it and the second half it was certainly backs to the walls.

"Coming to a place like this, it's a good night for us. We had to work hard and the only major disappointment was the goal we conceded," he added.

"We were very much aware of Sheffield Wednesday's presence from set-pieces, the delivery and quality of the crosses, we needed them all out there."

Clough also admitted there was a half-time chat about trying to turn the home crowd against their team.

"We were talking about that at half time - keep frustrating them and the longer it goes they are going to throw bodies forward."
