'Urhoghide, Hutch and Lees were mountains at the back today' - Sheffield Wednesday fans hail defence in win over Preston

A rare goal from defender Liam Palmer was enough to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory for Sheffield Wednesday over Preston North End and, more importantly, three badly-needed points in their quest for survival in the Championship.

The Worksop-born full-back scored his first goal in a decade and only his second for the club on the stroke of half-time to move the Owls within four points of fourth-from-bottom Nottingham Forest.

Remarkably, today’s victory was also the first time since the start of 2016 that Wednesday have won four games at Hillsborough in a row.

On Twitter after the game, our Owls writer Alex Miller posted: “Marvellous. In terms of scrap, that was miles away from Coventry. A really, really important win for Sheffield Wednesday, with the defence starring.”

But what did Wednesdayites make of today’s win at S6?

Let’s take a look at what they’re saying on Twitter tonight.

@Wheely365 Great result Owls. Cheered me right up.

@SteveRymill Never felt more like singing the blues…

@danhennell That was a massive win! Much better performance than midweek. Osaze was a beast at the back, MoM for me. Four home wins on the bounce, need to keep plugging away. Thommo’s barmy army until the end of the season. No point changing it now.

@RonnyCombo Fantastic win. Worked hard and deserved it. Urhoghide, Hutch and Lees were mountains at the back today. A lot of our problems would go away if we had a Fletch-like player to earn us the right to play in the oppo's half a bit more, without the ball coming straight back.

@Jordrl66 Usually a bit of a bogey team for us Preston, so massive three points today. #swfc sort manager situation out please.

@70_katylou Great three points. Dug in deep and ground out a result.

@AdamSWFC_ I questioned the line up but fair play lads, well in.

@NickNwarhurst Paterson and Urhoghide outstanding. Always prefer Hutch at CB too.

@michael_1867 Big win today. Felt Paterson played well and Urhoghide had another good game. Need to be putting games to bed; can’t keep hanging on, but a very welcome three points.

@swfcsc I think between Bully and Thompson they can create a siege mentality with the players and do enough - regardless of them getting paid or not. It might be our best chance of survival. Just stop looking Chansiri. Give them the job and then just stay at home and shut up.

@mrpaulhank Know we’ve won but gotta get more positive. Hung on today but what I’d give for a bit of a cushion rather than watching clock down.

@ryanswfc4 Massive shift from the boys today, back three were brilliant. Good to see Massimo Luongo back as well. Glad we’re starting to win games at home but we need to win games consistently home and away to stay in the division. Big game Tuesday at Bournemouth.
