The Owls suffered their sixth defeat in the last nine Championship matches, losing 1-0 at relegation-threatened Luton Town.

James Collins, who missed a penalty early on, bagged a 23rd minute winner to stretch Wednesday's winless league run to five matches.

Their abject showing provoked an angry response from the 1,000 plus travelling fans at the final whistle. They aimed 'you're not fit to wear the shirt' chants at the team as they trudged back to the away dressing room.

Since Christmas, Wednesday have taken just five points from the last 27 on offer to slip from third in the standings to 12th. The South Yorkshire club are now nine points adrift of the play-off positions.

Monk said: "The bottom line is it's not good enough.

"I am totally aware of that and I am totally responsible for that. It is my responsibility at the end of the day.

"It is my job to get the team winning and I haven't been able to do that in the last eight or nine games.

"But I am a fighter and I have fought my whole career and will continue to fight."

Monk, who took over the Owls reins in early September, has called on his players to stick together to arrest their slide down the table.

"I have tried hard to try and give them that confidence and belief but that has to come from within," admitted Monk.

"Understandably when you are on a run like we are on, confidence levels and belief in themselves is not going to be as high as it should be but we have to fight hard to come through this.

"We have talked for a few weeks about turning it around but we have made some really poor errors leading to goals in this run of games and given ourselves an even bigger battle to overcome."

Wednesday return to action on Saturday when they entertain 16th-placed Reading, who lost at home to leaders West Bromwich Albion last night. They trail the Owls by five points
