But when it comes to football, supporters love nothing more than a good away day – be it a trip to a decrepit lower league ground in the League Cup on a cold and wet Tuesday night or lapping it up at Old Trafford on Boxing Day.
The camaraderie, the craic, the train journeys, the boozy coach trips are the staple of supporting your team on a journey behind ‘enemy lines’.
And win, lose or draw, games away from home tend to stay long in the memory of fans up and down the country – and Wednesday fans are no different.
So, here are 11 ‘best away days’ – not including trips to Wembley and the Millennium Stadium – as suggested by Owls supporters on Twitter and Facebook.
1. Brentford 1-2 Wednesday, May 2005
The Division One play-off semi-final first leg win got several nominations, with Ta Lou posting on Twitter: "That was pretty special." Photo: Laurence Griffiths
2. Brighton 1-1 Wednesday, May 2016
A game which will live long in the memories of Owls fans everywhere, especially the thousands who were packed into the Amex for the Championship play-off semi final, second leg clash on that mid-May night four-and-a-half years ago. One of those was Paul Gething, who wrote on Facebook: "Too many to mention but Brighton in the play-offs was great. I just missed the train back to my digs by four hours, great night though!" And Connor McMain on Twitter posted: "Wednesday flags everywhere and cocktails been supped at 11am on the beach in the sun." We won't mention the play-off final at Wembley 12 days later . . . 3. Cardiff 0-2 Wednesday, May 1984
There was a crowd of around 15,000 at Ninian Park for the final game of the Second Division campaign of 1983/84 - but, depending on who you talk to, there was anything from 8,000 to 10,000 Wednesdayites who travelled to South Wales for a promotion party. Wednesday won the game 2-0 but were pipped by Chelsea to the title on goal difference. Owls fan Jeffrey Law remembers it well, posting on Twitter: "Coach load of Darnall Owls dressed in fancy dress, I ended up leading a conga round the pitch!" And Scott Owl wrote: "I was stood on their dugout as our players came out in the stand at the end of the game." Photo: UGC
4. Liverpool 0-2 Wednesday, September 1984
A win at Anfield back in the mid-80s was, like nowadays, pretty much unheard of. The mere sight of the iconic 'This is Anfield' sign, which greeted players as they made their way through the tight, narrow tunnel in the old Main Stand, was enough to intimidate some visiting teams. But not newly-promoted Wednesday who returned to S6 with all three points courtesy of Imre Varadi and Gary Shelton. "A fantastic day. I got thrown out of the middle of the Scousers near the away end for celebrating Varadi's goal and marched round to the Owls fans. Couldn't get a ticket in away end, even with my season ticket," says John Butcher on Twitter. Photo: Steve Ellis
