The central defender hasn’t featured in a first-team match since suffering a double leg break playing for his former club Wigan Athletic in February.

But four months after joining the Owls and after completing his recovery from the aforementioned serious injury, the 28-year-old will at long last get the chance to pull on a Wednesday shirt in anger for this afternoon’s huge South Yorkshire derby with Barnsley at Hillsborough.

He is one of two changes made by manager Tony Pulis and replaces Julian Borner, who went off injured in the midweek defeat at Huddersfield Town.

The other switch sees Joost van Aken coming into the side for Massimo Luongo.

Here’s what Wednesadayites on Twitter have made of today’s surprise team selection as Pulis looks to end a six-game winless run since he took over as manager at S6.

@mollllllllers Quite incredible to return to playing 10 months after a double leg break. A lot has been said about the delay in seeing him make his debut but these injuries are HORRENDOUS to recover from and potentially career threatening. Hope he can put a good shift in

@bigleeb I cannot see anything positive about this team picked, might as well play 10 defenders. We are so negative. It just draws all the hope out life

@WednesdayRetro Dunkley starting is a massive gamble. TP sticking with a lot of serial under-performers, Penney and Brown should be starting. Let’s see how this goes. Must win today #swfc

@Goswfcose Why no Brown - and Iorfa in midfield again?

@JBH_swfc It’s a joke how Pulis won’t start Brown because he’s too much of an attacking player. We need goals we need people to create chances. Start him.

@BenOwl1867 Double leg break no game in a year. No U23 games. Starts, madness. Van Aken turning like the Titanic

@isaacsimpsonn Brown on the bench once again, medieval football

@OneSwfc Where will the goals come from? I suppose we could send all of our many CBs up for a long Paterson throw then desperately cling on to our 1-0 lead. Can’t wait

@davegswfc Dunks’ thrown straight into the mixer, hope he doesn't have to go off after 10 minutes so Iorfa drops back and Pelupessy goes in midfield. It could be a long afternoon...
